Candidate for Kemper County Sheriff Jailed on Assault Charges
26-year-old Cornelius Parks, a candidate for sheriff in Kemper County, was charged last Thursday with aggravated assault and jailed for almost five hours, after he turned himself in to authorities.
Parks said Monday that he believes the charge is politically motivated.
“We believe the Kemper County Sheriff’s Department took advantage of an innocent situation,” said Parks. “We were advised we were going to turn ourself in at 9 o’clock that morning and the judge would be there. Unfortunately, she wasn’t there and I was behind bars until two o’clock. My attorney was there and we thought we should have been processed and brought to my attorney to wait on the judge.”
The aggravated assault charge against Parks was filed by his own brother. It stems from an incident which happened June 3 at Parks’ home in the Little Zion community. According to authorities, Parks displayed a weapon in the ordeal, and in turn, the charge was filed..
“We’re looking to get this thing dismissed for the simple fact that I’m innocent,” said Parks.
Parks’ attorney said he has requested a probable cause hearing which will be held in Kemper County Justice Court. A date for that has not yet been set. However, it’s possible that a judge could decide on that day whether or not to dismiss the charge.
