Childers Gives Up On Independents; Invites Bill Clinton to Oxford

Travis Childers, the “independent voice for North Mississippi” (according to his campaign) has apparently given up on independents in the First Congressional District. He has pinned his hopes on turning out his base. So he has invited former independent Democrat President Bill Clinton to a get-out-the-vote rally in Oxford. It will be Thursday at 11:30 at The Grove Stage. No word yet on whether the Childers Campaign will restrict the press from this event as well. This isn’t Clinton’s first trip to the district. During the 2008 Primary he visited and introduced Childers and Steve Holland.

Bill Clinton, a Southern Democrat from Arkansas, won the presidency in 1992 and again in 1996. He lost Mississippi both times. During the first mid-term election in his presidency, Mississippi’s First Congressional District elected its first Republican representative since Reconstruction. Short of bringing President Barack Obama or Speaker Nancy Pelosi to town, the Republicans have got to love this. It might not have been as fun, but it would have been less work for the Childers Campaign to just take all the independent votes in the district and send them to Alan Nunnelee in a tastefully wrapped present.
